WHY IS THE BOTTOM THINNER THAN THE TOP? When producing a body there are 2 processes- vac forming and blow molding. Tamiya back in 1986 experimented with blow molding to produce this body in order to achieve tuck under all the way around the body [it wasn't uncommon to receive a 959 body back then with week spots and sometimes holes] The reason the original body had thicker lexan on the tuck under sections is that during the process of blow molding the bottom section is formed first and the rest of the lexan sucks into the body mold leaving the bottom half thicker than the top. This process is expensive and not the hobby standard of producing bodies. As for vac forming ie. industry standard and our method of production the lexan is pulled over the top of the body mold leaving the top thicker and the bottom thinner.
Back in the beginning of June 2019, we upgraded our thermoforming equipment. We are very pleased to relay that this new upgrade is producing better crispness and detail in all the shells we sell. As you may or may not know, the original 959 was blow molded. This manufacturing process was done to achieve tuck under. Our bodies are vacuum formed not making the same tuck under possible. The front lower underside of the 959 body (nose) doesn't fully pull under. This has resulted in some thinner spots and webbing underneath. These areas are not visible unless you're viewing the body from the underside; the front bumper section is not affected. It's only underneath that thinness and webbing occurs. On the plus side, the detail we can achieve is incredibly crisp as seen in attached photos. The photos also show the difference using the new equipment verses the old (thinness and webbing pictured).
